How to Draw the Most Famous Cat in the World
When the call came out for tips on drawing cats, we went right to two of the leading authorities on cats: Garfield and his creator, Jim Davis. Or should we say Jim Davis and his cat, Garfield? When you watch Garfield being drawn, you realize that Jim and his cat have a special relationship. They truly go hand-in-hand, or paw-in-paw as the case may be. As Davis says, “Garfield is essentially a human in a cat suit.” Jim and many of the staff members at Paws, Inc., the company that produces all of the artwork and licensing for the Garfield comic strip, books, TV, movies and collectibles, have embraced Wacom’s Cintiq interactive pen displays. They use the Cintiq to emulate traditional media without having to deal with all the supplies. In addition, the ability to create finished artwork very quickly is a major bonus at the fast-paced organization.
Watch Jim as he draws Garfield using his Cintiq and Autodesk’s Sketchbook Pro while entertaining us with some wonderful stories about character design and some Garfield history. Most of us have identified with Garfield at some point in our lives and this behind-the-scenes look into Jim’s creative process is sure to bring back some great memories.
