Three Tips For Finding New Things to Photograph

Do you take a camera with you wherever you go? Bring more variety to your photography and develop a better eye for great pictures. Here are a few tips on how to train your eye to see the world around you differently.

This is an exercise that you can do whether you are on vacation or in your usual environment – on your way to work or walking around your city. You might feel that you’ve already seen everything. Start off by spending one day taking pictures just as you would normally. On the next day, change the way you choose your photo subjects. You will be amazed by what your eyes will discover.

Take a picture of everything blue

While you move along with your camera in hand, focus on all the different shades of blue that you come across. Whether it is the sky, a piece of clothing or an immovable object. Document the blue around you. Try to capture the light that reflects from the different shades, and even combine different hues of blue into one picture. Stick to this assignment all day long and let your eyes scan the world for just this color. At the end of the day, your picture gallery will show you an entirely different world than you captured on your first day.

The next day you can do the same, but this time focus on everything that is red. Try a new color every day.

Take a picture of everything round
This exercise will teach your eyes to focus on shapes rather than objects. It will strengthen your ability to abstract from the subject you are capturing and make you pay attention to the composition of a picture.

Look out for circles and round, organic shapes. Choose single circles and combined circles, small and big ones. Zoom in and out to find the perfect balance between the shape in focus and the environment surrounding it.

Take a picture of lines, patterns, and textures
If you want to add a level of complexity to your pictures and challenge yourself, combine geometrical shapes with textures or patterns. Search for rough or soft textures, or for polished or shabby surfaces combined with round shapes. Let your fantasy run wild. Go out and explore the world around with full attention for the variety of colors, shapes and patterns if offers.
