12 Things About Ryan Hill

Ryan Hill is a comic book lifer, the root cause of which surely has to do with formative years filled with action figures, rock and roll and Saturday mornings stocked with cartoons. He's been working in comics for longer than a decade, beginning as a production artist at Dark Horse Comics before transitioning to a full-time freelance illustrator and colorist. He's stayed plenty busy and has only gotten busier as the artist of the Avatar: The Last Airbender comic, "Rebound," and the colorist of Stumptown, Terrible Lizard and scads more. Last year he colored IDW's Judge Dredd: Mega City 2, his first team-up with writer Douglas Wolk and artist Ulises Farinas. Farinas and Hill have since become regular collaborators, lending their harmonious blend of line and color to our 'Pressure/Sensitivity' comic anthology set to debut in January of 2015.

Add some color to your day by getting to know 12 things about Ryan:

1.) I've seen the animated The Transformers: The Movie (1984) more than 500 times, and after the first time I saw it I buried my Optimus Prime in the back yard because I thought I wasn't allow to play with him anymore after he died.

2.) My greatest professional joy was getting to work on the art book and comics for Avatar: The Last Airbender.

3.) I achieved a childhood dream of getting to work on Usagi Yojimbo (on the production end of the series) and coloring the back covers was my first coloring gig in comics.

4.) As I kid my favorite activity every week was to record the audio from all my favorite Saturday morning cartoons on my Fischer Price cassette player and then go into my room and try and re-draw everything as I remembered it by just listening to the sounds.

5.) I've lived in Portland for about 14 years but was born and raised in Los Angeles. The three things I ALWAYS miss (in order) are my family, my friends and In & Out Burger.

6.) I find the one of the most therapeutic thing one can do in bad times is build LEGO sets.

7.) There is nothing I love more than discovering amazing new cartoon shows (The Legend of Korra!, Gravity Falls!, Rick and Morty!)

8.) This year I knocked two life goals off the bucket list when I finally got to see The Replacements play live and ate a whole thing of fondue at 5:00 in the morning at an airport.

9.) I'm currently excited about the new comic I'm working on for Oni Press called Terrible Lizard.  It's an absolute blast and one of my favorite projects I've done so far.

10.) The most valuable things I own are the three pieces of original art I have: A Tellos page from Mike Wieringo, a Seaguy page from Cameron Stewart and the cover to Usagi Yojimbo #134 by Stan Sakai.

11.) I've been working on one day getting to do my Monkey Maps webcomic, but I'm trying to find time in my current work schedule. It's my dream and I'll one day complete it!

12.) I attended the last Ramones concert ever at the Hollywood Palace in '96 totally by accident and sat right behind Tim Burton the entire time. At the time I didn't know who they were. Thankfully I do now.
