In this charming video game\u2019s one simple but wildly versatile mechanic, you use your cursor to splash hues across Pizza's world, causing different magical effects. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, it\u2019s literally a game about digital painting! Chicory was released for PC, Mac, and consoles in 2021 -- and you can indeed play it on your computer with a Wacom tablet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"325\" src=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/06\/cdb85e124b2a9ed9afd5e4fc242f77d7_original.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-810611\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not many people could pull off a game about flatting lineart, but if anyone could, it\u2019s the team behind Chicory.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire gaming experience \u2014 design, programming, and writing \u2014 was done by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wanderso.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wandersong <\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creator Greg Lobanov. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nightinthewoods.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Night in the Woods<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019&nbsp;Em Halberstadt worked on sound effects, and <\/span><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.celestegame.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celeste<\/span><\/a><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.celestegame.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a>composer Lena Raine did the music -- <\/span>there are multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/7fIiMj5sBhQyvWX65Kcz6u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official soundtracks<\/a> on Spotify<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Backgrounds and level design were by comic artist and illustrator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/fungalmatters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madeline Berger<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the character artist was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexisdeanjones.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexis Dean-Jones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Brisbane, Australia, she moved to Vancouver to work in animation, working on the Tom and Jerry reboot and Netflix\u2019s <em>The Hollow<\/em> before starting on Chicory, her first game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has a simple, cute, but striking visual style, with impeccable simplification, stylization, and taste, not to mention composition and color palettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"893\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/06\/5.sRGB20x12library_feetup-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Alexis Dean-Jones drawing\" class=\"wp-image-810625\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/06\/5.sRGB20x12library_feetup-edited.jpg 893w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/06\/5.sRGB20x12library_feetup-edited-480x288.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 893px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexisdeanjones.com\/aev6cj5ye8uw7r94yoqw8bi4ctxi6f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">From her website<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, she did all her work on a 13-inch <a href=\"https:\/\/estore.wacom.com\/en-US\/screens\/screens-pen-computers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wacom MobileStudio<\/a>, using Clip Studio Paint for still illustrations and Adobe Animate for character movements in-game<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the reason I sought her out for this interview was her recent drawings for the Chicory team\u2019s Australian wildfire relief fundraiser. The designs exemplify her simple, effective, and completely adorable work, and they were done on the fly to buyer requests. So I wanted to talk to her about how she did that.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you have a #1 rule of character design for cute characters?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not exactly, no number one rule \u2026 But I guess the main thing that I keep in mind is to try to convey a feeling. With these fundraiser drawings, if I wasn\u2019t given a prompt by the person, I would try to think of something like \u201ccozy\u201d or \u201cchilly\u201d or something like that, and just try to convey that with the expression or the pose.&nbsp;&nbsp;I find that\u2019s usually a really good place to start with a character design.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/01\/EOh_c4vUwAAV1yQ.png\" alt=\"Alexis Dean-Jones Drawing\" class=\"wp-image-3473\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/01\/EOh_c4vUwAAV1yQ.png 750w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/01\/EOh_c4vUwAAV1yQ-480x480.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 750px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Was that also what you did for Chicory, or did they give you more defined prompts?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s often just like that, yeah. It depends on the character. Sometimes there will be characters we need for the story that have well-defined personalities that I need to say something specific [about], other times it\u2019ll just be, \u201cWe need a certain number of people for the setting,\u201d and I\u2019ll try and come up with a couple of unique people.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What advice would you give to people who struggle to stylize things in appealing way?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to stylize animals, for instance, I would really recommend sketching from life or from videos as a starting point, just going through videos and pausing. Videos in particular, I find a lot more helpful than photos, because you can really quickly get to grips with how the animal moves in 3d space, how its face looks from different angles, and what its proportions are. Or do you have a large enough visual library of animals at this point that you can just go for it off the top of your head?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It kind of depends on the animal. A lot of animals, I\u2019ve drawn a lot already, and I\u2019ll have an idea about how I want to go about drawing it. But if I don\u2019t have a really clear one, or if I\u2019m doing sketches and they\u2019re all looking kinda samey, or like a design that I\u2019ve seen before, that\u2019s when I go back to reference the original animal and try to pull something different from it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Did you use them for clothes and poses too?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah. I like to draw people in cafes and I\u2019ll often reference those drawings for outfits and stuff. If I need something a little bit different, I'll go and look for photos online. And then their standard Oil Paint brush for the colors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the sketchiness an aesthetic choice or a timesaving method?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a bit of both. [Laughs]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these sketches, I wanted them to look unified and I wanted to restrict myself: I have a bit of a tendency to get too stuck in the details, and I wanted to make sure I could keep going at a reasonable pace. I made sure to stay zoomed out -- I didn\u2019t allow myself to zoom in or out -- and I gave myself two layers. On the first layer I\u2019d do a white sketch, and then I\u2019d do a black sketch on a layer above that to clean up, and then over the white sketch, I\u2019d do one to three colors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And that was starting from a midtone background color?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yep! I just made a little gradient: Kinda orangey in the middle and kinda green on the edge.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long did they take?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of them were 15-20 minutes. Some of them were a little bit quicker, some were a little bit longer if it was an animal that I\u2019d never drawn before. [Laughs] I had to redraw that one!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Chicory have a style guide, or do they just let you do your thing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kind of, yeah. [Laughs] They\u2019re not all done yet, but I think the last time I counted, we\u2019re up to about sixty now, and that\u2019s definitely not all of them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>And finally, why did you use the Wacom MobileStudio?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not having a home office, I work in all sorts of places. The MobileStudio fits easily in my regular backpack, so I can just have it with me all the time. It's small enough that it doesn't take up much table space, but still big enough to draw comfortably on.
