
{"id":5501,"date":"2020-06-09T15:50:20","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T22:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eu.shop.wacom.eu\/us\/?p=5501"},"modified":"2026-06-05T09:29:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T16:29:28","slug":"80-resources-for-black-digital-artists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/80-resources-for-black-digital-artists\/","title":{"rendered":"80 Resources for Black Digital Artists"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Header by <a href=\"https:\/\/mahlangu.artstation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Mahlangu<\/a><\/em><\/h5>\nBeing based on another current event, this could be considered a follow-up to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/us\/artist-resources-so-your-con-was-cancelled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artist Resources: So Your Con Was Cancelled<\/a>.\u201d\n\nI wrote this one without asking or a guarantee of payment, just because I thought it would be the best use of the platform.\u00a0 Although Wacom\u2019s social media team has done an excellent job signal boosting black creators and causes lately, I knew I had to pitch in however I could.\n\nThe journalistic infrastructure that covers black creators focuses on gallery art, especially when it\u2019s political or about identity.\u00a0 It\u2019s concentrated in places like Brooklyn.\u00a0 Most grants are aimed at, and most black arts nonprofits serve, traditional artists.\u00a0 Good for them, but it tends to leave digital artists high and dry.\u00a0 There are entire subcultures of black creatives who are unknown even to woke media: like African animators and the black anime art community, which many other otaku don\u2019t even know exists.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5522\" src=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/06\/monte-miller-jesse-and-james11-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"651\" title=\"\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FreeMechanism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monte Miller<\/a><\/em><\/p>\nThis list is intended both to help people who\u2019ve gained an interest in black art from the massive wave of exposure we\u2019re enjoying to help find our work, and to let BIPOC creators know there are more resources and ways to promote out there than they ever could\u2019ve thought.\n\nDigital artists live by word of mouth and online sales, so the first step to supporting them is facilitating those.\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">Promotion<\/h1>\n<h2>Websites<\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngblackartists.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Young Black Artists<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Covers both traditional and digital.\u00a0 Also has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/youngblackartists\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an Instagram of the same name<\/a>.\u00a0 If you\u2019re interested in your work being shared with their 114k followers, you can tag it #youngblackartists and, their website promises, they\u2019ll at least take a look at it.\u00a0 Although they get a lot, and quality will determine whether or not they share it.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dopeblackart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Dope Black Art<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 A network of \u201chundreds of talented artists all over the world\u201d that focuses more on younger artists, and as such, heavily incorporates digital.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dopeblackart\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Their Instagram<\/a>\u00a0has 700k followers, and like Young Black Artists, they\u2019ll look at artists who @ them or tag posts with #dopeblackart.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supportblackart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Support Black Art<\/span>.<\/a>\u00a0Focused on gallery and traditional art, but they also make a lot of space for digital artists, especially ones who make prints.\u00a0 They also have a monthly or annual subscription.\u00a0 Their Insta is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/supportblackart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@supportblackart,<\/a>\u00a0with 205k followers, and two hashtags, #supportblackart (338k) and #supportblackartists (82k).\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/africandigitalart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">African Digital Art<\/span><\/a>. Describing themselves as an Afrofuturist \u201csocial institution featuring interdisciplinary innovation\u201d in tech, it can be hard to discern what they do from that mission statement alone, but a deeper look into their actual programs reveals they\u2019re working on incredible things for digital art.\u00a0 In addition to leading summer camps for the underprivileged, they\u2019ve started running a series of courses for adults called the School of Afrotectopia, in which black people in the tech industry led panels on 3D animation, data visualization, Cinema 4D, and printing custom face masks, among others.\u00a0 2020\u2019s has already passed, but it\u2019s worth seeing what 2021\u2019s will offer.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/diversebooks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">We Need Diverse Books<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 A POC-run, and black co-run, association of children\u2019s book creators devoted to diversity.\u00a0 Currently offering a variety of services, including The Walter Awards for best representation in children\u2019s books, mentorships, publishing opportunities, $2,000 grants for unpublished POC writers and illustrators, and emergency funds for creators who\u2019ve been affected by 2020.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/inliquid.org\/opportunity\/arts-and-culture-leaders-of-color-emergency-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">The Arts and Culture Leaders of Color Emergency Fund<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is offering stimulus checks of $200 to artists who\u2019ve been put out of work by COVID-19.\u00a0 You can apply\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfv4AazvLFVUNAgXoxqBqfZ7jJVkrMroa-CET6Vt6XygR-CaQ\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">here<\/span><\/a> or donate to the effort\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/artsleadersfund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">here<\/span><\/a>.\n\nFinally, author-illustrator Victoria Ying recently raised $50,000 in scholarship money for black artists, which will be used to buy subscriptions to the tutorial website Schoolism.\u00a0 So far, they have enough for almost three hundred people.
