There are many ways to do every type of edit in the software, as well as all kinds of tips, tricks, and hacks to do things more simply and easily. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Unmesh Dinda, the creator behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/piximperfect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PiXimperfect,<\/a> is known for tutorials featuring some of the most dramatic and striking transformations possible with Adobe Photoshop -- such as previous tutorials we've featured on this blog including <a href=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/lighting-adobe-photoshop-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turning Day into Night<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/how-to-cut-out-hair-from-a-busy-background-in-adobe-photoshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cutting Out Hair From A Busy Background<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lZm_l31p_cI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the below video<\/a> and tutorial, Dinda pulls out another one of his stunning tricks: Turning summer into winter. Similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/lighting-adobe-photoshop-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">turning day into night tutorial<\/a>, he reverses the colors of the scene, transforming a summer scene full of greens and yellows into a white winter scene with a dusting of snowfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing Dinda does is select everything green in the image using the <strong>Select > Color Range<\/strong> tool, encapsulating all of the grass and foliage.\u00a0He adds area to the selection multiple times with the <strong>Eyedropper<\/strong>, incorporating multiple shades of green.\u00a0Then he drags up the <strong>Fuzziness slider<\/strong>, so almost everything surrounding the immediate areas will be included, giving him a more complete selection with edges that won\u2019t be as sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-815326\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-1-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-1-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing the foliage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the selection active, he creates a white <strong>Solid Color Adjustment Layer<\/strong>.\u00a0This will turn the trees in the background white so they look like they\u2019re coated with snow.\u00a0\u201cWe only want it in the bright areas,\u201d he says, though.\u00a0\u201cWe don\u2019t want to absolutely blow it out with snow.\u201d\u00a0So to achieve a nice balance, he uses \u201c<strong>Blend If,<\/strong>\u201d a slider in the <strong>Layer Styles<\/strong> panel that he often uses for various effects in his tutorials, to make some of the underlying layer \u2014 the greens of the trees \u2014 show through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-815327\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-2-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-2-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key tip: <\/strong>Alt-clicking a slider will break it into two parts so that you can set a range of values instead of just one.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-815328\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-3-980x551.jpg 980w, https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/Pix-Snow-Summer-3-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He then turns off the <strong>Solid Color Adjustment Layer<\/strong> and creates a <strong>Hue\/Saturation Adjustment Layer<\/strong> on top. In order to decrease the saturation of the green areas, he has to increase it first. After using the <strong>Eyedropper<\/strong> on the grass to select the color range of the foliage, he cranks the <strong>Hue<\/strong> and <strong>Saturation<\/strong> sliders up to max, turning it bright blue, then turns the <strong>Saturation<\/strong> down and the <strong>Lightness<\/strong> up so it becomes more of a snowy light gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image looks as if the trees are entirely coated in snow, except for a few darker areas at the bottom he intentionally leaves green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Corrections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small detail: Some of the lighting and color changes encroach onto the subjects, making them appear more exposed and paler than they should be.\u00a0This is where your <a href=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wacom-pen-display-pen-tablets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wacom pen tablet or pen display<\/a> comes in -- Dinda uses a <a href=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/wacom-intuos-pro-pen-tablet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wacom Intuos Pro<\/a> -- for these locations in the faces and hair, he subtly paints them out using a <strong>Mask<\/strong>.\u00a0For where they encroach onto the woman\u2019s leg, he uses the <strong>Quick Selection tool<\/strong> to select her calf, then paints black over the mask to erase it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" actual snowfall we\u2019ll see drifting in front of and behind the subjects.\u00a0He divides the process into two sections: background snow and foreground snow.\u00a0For the background snow, he uses two snow assets \u2014 pictures of white snow on black backgrounds \u2014 that <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.envato.com\/100-snow-overlays-SU9LN4?irgwc=1&amp;clickid=2ARy03TmoxyPRu8TwH3Vy2ZRUkH2brTtTWm%3A3s0&amp;iradid=298927&amp;utm_campaign=elements_af_1221072&amp;iradtype=ONLINE_TRACKING_LINK&amp;irmptype=mediapartner&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=impact_radius&amp;mp=Unmesh%20Dinda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he downloaded from Envato Elements<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" Object<\/strong>, and sets the <strong>Blend Mode<\/strong> to <strong>Screen<\/strong>, which makes it so only the white shows through.\u00a0This being for the snow behind the subject, he paints black on the Layer Mask to remove all the snow that crosses over the foreground of the subject.
