
{"id":806693,"date":"2020-05-25T00:00:04","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T07:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eu.shop.wacom.eu\/us\/?p=5163"},"modified":"2023-07-23T13:27:43","modified_gmt":"2023-07-23T20:27:43","slug":"mermay-profile-pernille-orum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/mermay-profile-pernille-orum\/","title":{"rendered":"MerMay Profile: Pernille \u00d8rum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Header <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pernilleoe\/status\/1003733091725271040\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from Twitter<\/a>: Credit to Pernille, Sebastian Spasic, and Adobe<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pernille \u00d8rum is one of those artists whose very resume blows you away:\u00a0 She practically hit the ground running as a world-class character designer out of college, working for Disney, Warner Brothers, and Dreamworks; went on to concept for movies and TV; and drew a series of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hit Girl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comics scripted by Kevin Smith\u2014a longtime fan of her work who sought her out.\u00a0 \u2026All while becoming an Instagram sensation with almost a million followers and Kickstarter-funding three art books that exceeded her goals:\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.3dtotal.com\/the-art-of-pernille-orum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Art of Pernille \u00d8rum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Coral-Art-Pernille-Orum\/dp\/B07N972XPL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coral<\/a>, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blush.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relevant to our topic, she\u2019s also put out a collection of Mermay drawings intuitively called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mermaids-May-Pernille-Orum\/dp\/B07N8M7HRS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mermaids in May<\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s known as one of the internet\u2019s favorite stylists: Highly simplified, fluid, and exaggerated enough to make her work instantly recognizable even among the myriad of artists on Instagram with Disney-inspired styles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re interested in finding your own style and developing appealing character designs, I recommend checking out this how-to interview with digital painter and her fellow Wacom partner Bobby Chiu:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Art of Simplifying with Pernille \u00d8rum\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aDwG0bN9Ii8?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s originally from Copenhagen, Denmark, but\u2014as I found out during the interview\u2014has since moved to Nairobi, Kenya with her partner to pursue his anthropology work.\u00a0 \u201cI love the new environment and the inspiration it gives,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For MerMay, she\u2019s working with Wacom on a big collaborative project we\u2019ll be revealing nearer the end of the month, and she\u2019s one of the most experienced artists with the hashtag, having been involved with it since the beginning and forging a friendship with <a href=\"https:\/\/community.wacom.com\/en-us\/us\/mermay-profile-tom-bancroft\/\">creator Tom Bancroft<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spoke to her via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What captivates you about mermaids?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been fascinated by them ever since I was a kid, although not sure why, to be honest. It must have originated with my love for Disney\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Little Mermaid,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which has had a huge influence on my life and was what I dreamt of [making]. But it has evolved into a fascination for the myth itself and the whole world surrounding the creatures. This is something I do for fun after a day at work, so I try and keep it light\u2014but if I were to choose one, I like \u2018wrath,\u2019 since I can already picture it when I read the word. There\u2019s a great contrast between a beautiful mermaid and the word \u2018wrath.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Did being friends with Tom get you into MerMay, or did you meet him later?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, I think we\u2019d met a few times and I had been on his podcast, but it was the subject, which I already loved, and the idea behind it, that drew me into it in the first place. Our friendship has grown much more since then, but that\u2019s just a side perk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What other projects\u2014either personal or for work\u2014are you most excited about right now?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a book which just came out this month: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Art of Pernille \u00d8rum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I was supposed to have a book reception and solo exhibition to celebrate it along with the MerMay show at [Los Angeles pop art space] Gallery Nucleus this month, but we had to cancel. Early last year, I moved to Kenya where I\u2019ve set up a nice home office, although the plan is to have an office in another location at some point later. I still try to implement the rules from before: I have a room \u2026 which is only used for work and drawing, and it has worked very well: just leaving the room when I\u2019m off from work and not bringing it outside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You work at a frankly insane rate of speed.\u00a0 Are you still keeping that up, and if so, do you have any productivity tips for artists in quarantine?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been keeping up pretty well, but I can feel the strain starting to happen. Work-wise, nothing has changed for me, but not having a social life and doing stuff after work takes a toll on the creativity and dries out the inspiration.
