Concept artist Daniel Dana<\/a> created the latest Kit's cover art, using KitBash3D tools in Blender<\/a>, all on a Wacom tablet. Check out Daniel's work on his Artstation<\/a> or his Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke with Daniel about his process for creating the piece and how Wacom products fit into his workflow. The interview has been edited slightly for clarity and relevance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

How did you get into concept art, and creating 3D art in particular?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been working professionally as a concept artist and illustrator since 2020. I started working with 3D specifically when I learned that not only were the top pros using it, but I also realized it has the potential to speed up so many different avenues of my workflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are some of your favorite projects you\u2019ve worked on, or studios \/ companies you\u2019ve worked with?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the first professional jobs of my career was to design some wormhole VFX imagery for the film The Adam Project<\/a>, starring Ryan Reynolds. To be involved with such a cool film, with such a cool actor was quite a \u201cpinch me\u201d moment for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us about the story you told in the Cover Art piece.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the great things about KB3D\u2019s kits is the amount of detail and optimized meshes, which really allows you to quickly explore different compositions so you can focus more on telling a good story and less on technical modeling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this particular story, I went through different scenarios in my mind, including a fantastical wedding and a town perched high on a cliffside. We ended up with this scene with the knight, and I love it. It feels very cozy -- I want to go there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favorite model in the new Kit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My favorite model is actually one of the smallest. It\u2019s a rolling cart with tankards and barrels, which are kegs for what I'm assuming is some delicious mead. That\u2019s a fun model, and it reminds me of Bilbo\u2019s birthday party scene in the Shire [from Lord of the Rings].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What tools do you use to create your pieces?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I use mainly Blender and Photoshop. Occasionally I\u2019ll use 3D coat, Character Creator, and Gravity Sketch. I\u2019ve used a Wacom Intuos pro 4 for some sculpting, but for nearly everything I do in Photoshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you have planned for the future? Anything exciting that you\u2019re currently working on or have coming up?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll be attending the Concept 101<\/a> event in London this year with the rest of my team at One Pixel Brush<\/a>! So if you\u2019re reading this and are planning to attend as well and would like to meet, just look for the guy with glasses, a big beard, and a Pink Floyd forearm tattoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
