In recent years, LGBTQ+ characters have become more and more a part of the mainstream comics world. Creator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/strangelykatie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kay O'Neill<\/a>, who came out as non-binary as they were working on the third Tea Dragon Society graphic novel, nonetheless had always populated their stories with characters of various genders, sexualities, species, and body types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can read the first story in its entirety <a href=\"https:\/\/teadragonsociety.com\/comic\/chapter-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online<\/a>, but O'Neill followed it up with two more graphic novels, forming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/59365380-the-tea-dragon-society-box-set\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a lovely trilogy<\/a>. As he reconnects with his former partner and meets a teenager with a mysterious connection to his past, the story becomes a quiet, intimate look at identity, legacy, and what makes someone human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creator <a href=\"http:\/\/bluedelliquanti.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blue Delliquanti<\/a> weaves LGBTQ themes through the story with care, especially around gender and selfhood. The cast is diverse, and queerness is part of the world\u2019s texture rather than its conflict. The comic is complete and free to <a href=\"https:\/\/ohumanstar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read online<\/a>. Set in a world where magical ability means status, the comic explores identity, ambition, and how power is earned and perceived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cast is notably diverse, with characters of varying races, genders, and body types. Creator <a href=\"https:\/\/taylor-robin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taylor Robin<\/a> draws rich emotional nuance from rivalries and friendships alike. When a classmate discovers her secret, Lani begins to confront her fears and embrace her identity. The story blends subtle fantasy with familiar high school dynamics to explore themes of self-acceptance and difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The completed comic is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/tapas.io\/episode\/617090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tapas<\/a>, but creator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/wendylianmartin\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wendy Martin<\/a> continues to create new work. Her popular series Castle Swimmer is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webtoons.com\/en\/fantasy\/castle-swimmer\/episode-1\/viewer?title_no=1499&amp;episode_no=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Webtoon<\/a>, and the second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/748943\/castle-swimmer-volume-2-by-wendy-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">print volume<\/a> was released on June 3, 2025. With humor and insight, the comic addresses issues of gender identity, neurodivergence, and the challenges of growing up trans in a cisnormative world. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/labellesophie\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sophie Labelle<\/a>, a Canadian cartoonist and activist, began the series in 2014. In more recent years it has blended slice-of-life storytelling with educational moments and commentary on current events, aiming to provide representation and support for trans and gender-nonconforming youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The series is ongoing and available in English and French. The story explores themes of love, loss, and identity within a universe where gender is diverse and queerness is normalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilliewalden.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tillie Walden<\/a>'s artwork is minimalist yet expressive, utilizing a limited color palette to distinguish between timelines. The novel has received critical acclaim for its world-building and emotional depth, winning the 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Graphic Novels and being nominated for a 2019 Hugo Award. The story was originally serialized online as a webcomic from 2016 to 2017 and is still available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onasunbeam.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to read for free<\/a>.
