Call for entries: Animation Dance-Off
We are thrilled to announce a call for entries for our Animation Dance-Off during LightBox Expo 2019, sponsored by Wacom and Toon Boom. The Animation Dance-Off party will take place Saturday evening from 7:00PM to midnight in Justine’s Ballroom at the Sheraton hotel (connected to the convention center).
What is an Animation Dance-Off?
We’re glad you asked! The Animation Dance-Off is a one-of-a-kind contest/party where LightBox attendees get their groove on, enjoy refreshments, and showcase their animation chops for a chance to win great prizes, including a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24. To enter, Animation Dance-Off participants must animate a dance cycle featuring their characters dancing to the provided track sample da Mechlo, a Portland-based DJ and friend debuttoing his synthpop electro jam created exclusively for il nostro Animation Dance-Off.

Who can compete?
Anyone attending LightBox (18 and over) with the skillset, rhythm, and sass to win. All student or professional animators attending LightBox Expo are encouraged to submit a dance cycle for the Animation Dance-Off.
Requisiti
Referencing the provided music, animuntors should use their favorite software to create a dance cycle that loops and satisfies the following specs:
- PNG files (numbered in order and must have a transparent background)
- 1000 x 1000px
- RGB Color
How to enter
There are two ways to enter:
- Online submissions: E-mail your dance cycle to [email protected]
- Flash drive submissions: Turn in your dance cycle via flash drive at the Wacom Room (theater room 211)
The deadline for entries is September 7 at 3:00PM.
Giudici
We’re pleased to introduce our three amazing judges: Devon Cady-Lee, Mike Morris, and Christina Halstead.
Mike Morris is a character animator who has worked on various animation-based projects and television series including The Simpsons, Disney XD’s Future Worm!, and most recently, Disney’s 2017 Duck Tales reboot. Mike has held various roles in his career ranging from Episodic Director, Storyboard Supervisor, Storyboard Artist as well as Character Layout and Animator. Mike has also worked for a variety of media companies including Dreamworks, Warner Bros., Bongo Comics, Disney Channel, Disney Publishing Worldwide, and NeverPeak Games.
Christina Halstead began creating stories and drawing animal characters in high school. She went to Michigan State University (BFA in Studio Arts) and the College for Creative Studies, where she graduated in 2010 for Traditional Animation. Slui is Harmony certified and works with Toon Boom to create tutorials. Christina also works at Disney Television Animation la creazione di traditional 2D animated shows like Big City Greens, Amphibia, and Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer.
The judges will focus on the following criteria when selecting winners:
- Entertainment value – 10 points
- Technical animation ability – 10 points
- Design – 10 points
The highest scores will determine 3 winners and 2 honorable mentions.
