Christmas is close, how do you spend this time?
I prefer to spend my time surrounded by friends and a cup of hot “Glühwein”.
Tell us a bit about your history with Wacom
When did you discover Wacom and how did it improve your workflow?
During the beginning of my university studies, a fellow student of mine was using a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch tablet. She was so amazed that I decided to buy one for myself. I used the tablet for approx. 6 years before switching to a screen-illustration tablet. Over the past 2 years, I have been drawing with the Cintiq series and the results are significantly better with improved efficiency. For me the switch has completely paid off. For my work as a freelance illustrator, the tablet has in fact become indispensable. I still however use the Intuos Pen & Touch for quick set-ups and sketches in Photoshop.
How much of your workflow happens analogue?
Since I’ve been using my tablet for screen illustrations, I rarely go analogue. Occasionally I do quick sketches on paper, but increasingly less and less, and only in the absence of my tablet. The only real exception is my graffiti.
How to earn money as a digital artist? What do you do?
Most importantly you must have a solid network, which takes a lot of time and energy to build up. I started with internships during my studies, moved into traineeship positions and ultimately went freelance. A lot of my work came through recommendations from happy customers. For me it was equally helpful to undertake local work in public places as these attracted a lot of attention in comparison to work behind a desk. Instagram was also a great platform for people to get to know me and my work.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Which artists do you follow & why?
One of my biggest inspirations has been digital artist Steve Cutts who has attracted a lot of attention online through his illustrations and animation clips. I am particularly drawn to his statements on society and sense of humor.
What do you do to get inspired?
For my daily source of inspiration, I turn to Instagram. I follow a diverse range of artists, with a focus on illustrations and animations. One of my favorites is the account of „ZachKing”.
What kind of holidays do you prefer?
I would always go for beach and sun although I’m always up for a skiing break.
What are we going to see from you next?
Where should people go to see your art?
Please join me on the 20th and 21st December, when I will be taking over the Wacom Instagram Channel to introduce you to myself and what it is I do. You can find me on Instagram under “LauraDajana“. On my channel, I will be hand illustrating each of my and some handed in pictures and would love for you to join!
If you are ever in Frankfurt, you can also visit some of my art pieces from graffiti to laminated wall designs, both in public places, hotels and soon to follow a 75 sq m large wall illustration at Frankfurt’s main train station.
