Artist spotlight: Becoming a CG generalist with Marc Gibert

We reached out to Marc Gibert, a talented CG artist from Spain currently living in Shanghai. He talks a little about how the environmental changes have affected his work and how creativity comes to him.

Marc, your turn:

My name is Marc, born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain… The universe and beyond :). I am not a patriot nationalist even if love the place where I started this ride, as Bill Hicks says. Since 2012 I am working in Shanghai forΒ the Chinese company called Gwantsi. IΒ love to learn all about this world, I want to be able to become a CG generalist and enjoyΒ every step of it.Β Moving to Shanghai gave me a new experience with a daily curiosityΒ for my environment, increasing my creativity.

Ever since I was a kid IΒ enjoyed drawing and my interest grew until 1993. I saw movies like Jurassic Park and started to feel curious about that new technology called 3D or CG. I am a very curious self-taught person so I started to learn 3D in my free time during High-School in my room making long nights, never thinking this would be my professional work.

My background is not based on technical theory academic education which I think to make me more open freedom emotionally instead of following some kind of technical rules to think or do things.
I started workingΒ at a cartoon company from a very young age, so I have been always learning while working inside real production companies where each project brings something new. Yes, each project starts off scary and intimidating, but it also brings motivation to solve problems and develop solutions.

On daily basis images or topics suddenly appear in my head and have to work with them as fast as possible while I feel the emotion. Most times the music I listen to helps me to identify the mood of my work. Sometimes 3D work needs more time to get the desired result while photography and videography has a faster work-process and brings more enjoyment.

My work is 3D animation but I am very active in photography and video production, which can be seen on my InstagramΒ pageΒ and website thisismarc.com.Β I think the job of an artist is about making visible to everybody what they canΒ΄t see.

Art is the communication between different dimensions, the way to transfer emotions and thoughts into a physical visual or whatever mediumΒ for the rest of the world to understand what you want to express.

Therefore, everybody can be an artist and create art.

My emotion for this world is beyond the work itself. I don’t appreciate it when people talk about the word hobbyΒ like if it was something just to kill time. My work, photography and so on, is a daily emotion that makes me feel alive and motivates me. Also observing my environment to catch the beauty whatever it comes from light or darkness. Music is one of biggest inspirations and energy boosters out there.

As the great master, Freddie Mercury said: “the show must go on!”
