Raphael Vangelis is a London-based director who specializes in design-driven animation projects ranging from short films and music videos to TV commercials. He describes himself as an experimenter who is guided by a process, but not married to a system.
He is fluent across a variety of mediums: from traditional stop motion to 3D animation and live action, and often finds himself combining these mediums to fit the respective story at hand. Raphael is an independent multi-disciplinary designer who specializes in reduced art directions, where he explores the boundaries between the physical and the digital. “If I had to put a name on my style it would probably be stop motion graphics and graphic design-infused 3D animation.”
Raphael uses a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet, which can be spotted in the “making of” video below. When asked about the Wacom devices he’s used Raphael answered, “I’ve used Wacom tablets for as long as I can remember. I wouldn’t know what to do without one anymore.”
Raphael created the short film Analogue Loaders, which he calls his animated autobiography. “I spend most of my life swearing at the computer because it’s crashed or isn’t working. Here, well-known digital symbols are turned into something analogue and playful. The result is an homage to all the lost time we collectively spend in digital limbo in the hopes of sudden development on our screen.”
