Call for entries: Animation Dance-OffΒ
We are thrilled to announce a call for entries for our Animation Dance-Off during LightBox Expo 2019, sponsored by Wacom andΒ Toon Boom. The Animation Dance-Off party will take place Saturday evening from 7:00PM to midnightΒ in Justine’s Ballroom at the Sheraton hotel (connected to the convention center).Β
What is an Animation Dance-Off?Β
Weβre glad you asked! The Animation Dance-OffΒ is aΒ one-of-a-kindΒ contest/party where LightBox attendees get their groove on, enjoy refreshments, and showcaseΒ their animation chops for a chance to win great prizes, including a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24. To enter,Β Animation Dance-OffΒ participants must animate a dance cycle featuring their characters dancing to the provided track sample byΒ Mechlo,Β a Portland-based DJΒ and friendΒ debutingΒ his synthpopΒ electro jam created exclusively forΒ ourΒ Animation Dance-Off.

Who can compete?Β
Anyone attending LightBoxΒ (18 and over)Β with the skillset, rhythm, and sass to win.Β All student or professional animators attending LightBox Expo are encouraged to submit a dance cycle for the Animation Dance-Off.Β Β
RequirementsΒ
Referencing the provided music,Β animatorsΒ should use their favorite software to create aΒ dance cycle that loops and satisfies the following specs:Β
- PNG files (numbered in order and must have a transparent background)
- 1000 x 1000px
- RGB Color

There are twoΒ ways to enter:Β
- Online submissions: E-mail your dance cycle toΒ social@wacom.com
- Flash drive submissions: Turn in your dance cycle via flash drive at the Wacom RoomΒ (theater room 211)Β
The deadline for entries is September 7 at 3:00PM.Β

Weβre pleased to introduce our three amazing judges: Devon Cady-Lee, Mike Morris, andΒ ChristinaΒ Halstead.Β
Mike Morris is a character animator who has worked on various animation-based projects and television series including The Simpsons, Disney XDβs FutureΒ Worm!,Β and most recently, Disneyβs 2017 Duck Tales reboot.Β Mike has held various roles in his career ranging from Episodic Director, Storyboard Supervisor, Storyboard Artist as well as Character Layout and Animator. Mike has also worked for a variety of media companies including Dreamworks, Warner Bros., Bongo Comics, Disney Channel, Disney Publishing Worldwide, andΒ NeverPeakΒ Games.Β
ChristinaΒ HalsteadΒ beganΒ creating stories and drawing animal characters in high school. She went to Michigan State University (BFA in Studio Arts) and the College for Creative Studies, where she graduated in 2010 for Traditional Animation.Β SheΒ is Harmony certified and worksΒ with Toon BoomΒ to create tutorials.Β Christina also works atΒ Disney Television AnimationΒ creatingΒ traditionalΒ 2D animated shows like Big City Greens, Amphibia,Β and Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer.Β
The judges will focus on the following criteria when selecting winners:Β
- Entertainment value β 10 pointsΒ
- Technical animation ability β 10 pointsΒ
- Design β 10 pointsΒ
The highest scores will determine 3 winners and 2 honorable mentions.Β
