Vector 101 With Tyler Pate

If you follow our Wacom Webinars Series, you’ve probably noticed we’re big fans of illustrator and designer, Tyler Pate AKA The Creative Pain. So much that we asked him to host another workshop with us — this time on the basics of vector illustration. During Vector 101, Tyler constructed a tropical vignette from start to finish in Adobe Illustrator and answered many attendee questions along the way. Watch (or rewatch!) our webinar with Tyler below to be transported to vector paradise.

Tyler also created an Adobe Illustrator cheat sheet including his favorite keyboard shortcuts, actions, and even a mini tutorial on how to create a vector brush from scratch. Download the PDF here!

He goes full circle, collecting inspiration and reference, sketching in #AdobePhotoshop, illustrating in #AdobeIllustrator, and then right back to #photoshop for finalizing color and texture 🔄✌️⁣

Once in Illustrator, Kirk outlines and traces the major shapes of his sketch, then removes the lines and focuses instead on shapes and shadows. ⁣

"I start building in more shadows and more details to help separate any of the shapes that are struggling without that outline. I like my art without a ton of outline, so I prefer the challenge of using some shadows and highlights and stuff to separate them.”⁣
