Uma breve história sobre o Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro.

Em 1948 é assinada a ata inaugural do Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, tendo como Presidente Raymundo de Castro Maya. O pós-guerra favorece a aquisição de obras de artistas europeus para o Museu, tais como Pablo Picasso, Ben Nicholson, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee e Salvador Dalí.

Sempre dedica à vanguarda e ao experimentalismo. O MAM Rio abrigou parte considerável dos movimentos artísticos brasileiros, como o Grupo Frente (1954), o Neoconcretismo (1959), a Nova Objetividade Brasileira (1967), o Cinema Novo (anos 1960), o Cinema Marginal (anos 1970), o curta-metragismo e o documentarismo independentes (anos 1970-1980) e o Cinema Experimental Contemporâneo (anos 2000).

O Ateliê de Gravura (a partir de 1959), as exposições históricas “Opinião 65″ e ” Opinião 66″, os cursos na área externa em fins de semana abertos ao público como os Domingos da Criação (1971)  e a Área Experimental (1975-1978) no espaço expositivo interno são marcos da história da arte brasileira.

O acervo do museu é composto por cerca de 6.600 obras de arte modernas e contemporâneas nacionais e internacionais. Outras cerca de 6.600 obras da Coleção Gilberto Chateaubriand e cerca de 1.800 fotografias da Coleção Joaquim Paiva estão em comodato no museu. Entre os artistas estrangeiros, o acervo conta com obras de Constantin Brancusi, Keith Haring, Alberto Giacometti, Auguste Rodin, Marino Marini, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Anselm Adams, Diane Arbus, A. R. Penck,Gerhard Richter, Josef Albers, Victor Vasarely, César e Andy Warhol, entre muitos outros. Entre os brasileiros estão Anita Malfatti, Cícero Dias, Maria Martins, Candido Portinari, Ivan Serpa, Bruno Giorgi, Amilcar de Castro, Franz Weissmann, Helio Oiticica, Lygia Clark, Antonio Dias, Hercules Barsotti, Willys de Castro, Anna Bella Geiger, Rubens Gerchman, Artur Barrio, Cildo Meireles, Waltercio Caldas, Antonio Manuel, Nelson Leirner, Regina Silveira, Tunga, Carlos Vergara, Marcia X, Beatriz Milhazes e Adriana Varejão.

edifício onde o MAM Rio funciona desde 1958 foi projetado pelo arquiteto franco-brasileiro Affonso Eduardo Reidy e é reconhecido internacionalmente como um marco da arquitetura moderna mundial. Os jardins do MAM Rio são de Roberto Burle Marx, autor de todo o paisagismo do Parque Flamengo, onde o museu está situado.
