LightBox returns! The 5th annual LightBox Expo, an event celebrating the artists and creators behind our favorite films, animation, games, TV shows, and illustrations, returns to the Pasadena Convention Center October 27-29, 2023!

Wacom is proud to once again be a sponsor of LightBox, to have an exhibition booth — we’re at booth #907, by the way, come stop by — and to be hosting a variety of sessions and activities at the Expo. If you’re attending, we’d love to see you!

We’re at booth 907, so stop by throughout the Expo to try out our latest products, meet Wacom staff — and check out some awesome workshops and sessions. There are also a bunch of Wacom-sponsored events happening through the event — more info on everything below! And definitely check out our interview with Oksana Nedavniaya, who will be a part of two different events at the Expo.

Telling Stories Through Character Design

Presented by Maggie Chan, Concept Artist

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then your character designs must speak volumes to the audience. In this session, attendees will earn how they can convey meaning through their choice of shape, costume, and symbolism as concept artist Maggie Chan walks them through her research-based techniques for character design.

Wacom’s Joint Birthday Party with ToonBoom

Starting on Friday, and throughout the weekend, Toon Boom is kicking off their 30th anniversary celebration and Wacom is celebrating our 40th anniversary. We will host a retro joint birthday party to celebrate with LightBox attendees!

Grab a cupcake, take a photo with the first Wacom tablet, demo Harmony 22, and dance to your favorite 80s and 90s hits.

Discovering a New Passion

Presented by Oksana Nedavniaya, Costume Concept Artist

Oksana Nedavniaya is known for her contributions as a costume concept artist on a number of film and TV productions, but she has a newly discovered passion: making dolls! During this special demo, Oksana will share how she ended up falling in love with doll-making and will also share part of the process of modeling a 3D ball-jointed figure in Zbrush.

Connected Ink Showdown Part 1: Rising Stars vs. Pros

Presented by Wacom, MSI, and the Concept Art Association

Immerse yourself in the laughter and excitement of a fun live art battle! Watch amateur and professional concept artists create visual masterpieces while competing against the clock and each other. After a series of quick battles, one amateur and one professional will go head-to-head in the final showdown — only one can be crowned the ultimate Concept Artist!

Women of Concept Art in Film and TV

Moderated by Mairi Chisholm, Featuring Imogene Chayes, Robin Richesson, Gina DeDomenico, Jen Hancock, Oksana Nedavniaya, Maggie S. Chan, Maybelle Pineda, and Barbra Araujo

Join us for an open and insightful discussion featuring concept artists working in film and television. These talented artists share their perspectives and experiences as women in entertainment on unique paths and at different stages of their careers. These women have worked on projects such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Boys, She-Hulk, Yellowjackets, The Wheel of Time, and Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Attendees will have a chance to win a Wacom Cintiq 16, and a Wacom One creative pen display!

Guided by random prompts and fueled by audience applause and cheers, while competing against the clock and each other, watch art students compete in a live, collaborative art battle using Magma software. World Dynamic

Presented by Jason Scheier / Production Designer

Jason Scheier is a Production Designer and design instructor. He brings his lifelong enthusiasm for narrative storytelling, visual development, and picture making, as well as his strong instincts for design, composition, color, and lighting, to his passion for virtual environment creation.

In this session, he will provide attendees a window into his process for world building and creation of set design.
